Against Nature: Dangerous Wilderness in Film

There are countless films that deal with the sublime beauty of the natural world. In this course, we won’t watch any of them. Instead, we’ll explore films where nature is not the “mother,” it is the bad buy. Students will view three movies from across genres that grapple with the natural environment as a malevolent force and that consider how humans respond when the wild can’t be controlled, contained or subdued. Featured films are Jaws, Meek’s Cutoff, and Burden of Dreams.
